Mary Davies Kerns



Mary Davies Kerns has been a professional artist for thirty two years. She has been a cattle rancher all her life. Would being a professional artist be easier if she
weren’t a full time rancher? Yes, but her artwork wouldn’t be the same. Her paintings are of her life. She and her husband live on the ranch her grandfather
homesteaded in the early 1900’s. The arid high desert of Eastern Oregon is what
Mary paints. The cattle she observes out her dining room window, the horses, the
dogs, the sunsets…these are Mary’s subject matter. The sky, the clouds, the
sagebrush haunt her with their subtle beauty.

Currently Mary works in acrylic paint. For larger pieces Mary paints on canvas she
tacks to her studio wall. Another option is painting on prepared Masonite. This
allows her to customize the size of her painting’s width and height to correspond
with her creative vision. Her paintings range in size from 3 x 4” cloudscapes to 30
x 40” panoramas of the vast desert landscapes with huge skies. “I am working to
bring the depth and panorama of our space and beautiful skies onto a two
dimensional surface”.

Mary’s  markets her work throughout the west. A few of her venues have
included the Cowboy Poetry and Gear gathering in Elko Nevada, the Clymer
Museum in Ellensburg, Washington and summer Art in the Park events in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming and Boise, Idaho. Her patrons appreciate her fresh approach to
Western subject matter.
